Today the topic of my impromptu speech is that when it is dark enough, you can see the stars. I can’t agree with this saying more. In my opinion, Darkness is about the frustrations. “enough” is about the effort and the “stars” are the hopes, dreams or success. So this saying teaches me three things: making my objective and direction clear, being prepared for wrestling with frustrations and difficulties and importantly, keeping in faith. So, I have three points to support my opinion.
First, we should make our objective and direction clear before we set out. We can’t see the stars during the day time. Is it because that there are no stars here? Of cause not. The stars are over there in the sky all the time. We can’t see them because they are hidden behind the sunlight. So, we should not waste our time. Rather, we should turn to the night to find our stars. So before we set out for our dreams. It’s very important to know what exactly we want and which direction to go to find it.
Second, we should be prepared for wresting with frustrations and difficulties. We can’t expect that the way to our objective are smooth and easy. In the darkness, we may feel cold, lonely and be afraid of some unexpected frustrations, just as on the way to our dreams and success. But, only in darkness could we see the stars. Similarly, only by experiencing hardships and setbacks can we be clear about our goals and objectives. So, we should be not afraid of the difficulties we have to experience. Rather, we should hold a positive attitude to fully prepared for them.
The last but not the least point is that we should keep in faith and don’t give up. Sometime we may feel disappointed after having been working hard for such a long time but still can’t reach our dreams. But, we shouldn’t give up and instead we should just keep in faith. May be our efforts are not enough. We need to work hard and keep waiting for a little bit longer, and we will see the hope soon.

It is a commonplace among moralists that you cannot get happiness by pursuing it. This is only true if you pursue it unwisely. Gamblers at Monte Carlo are pursuing money, and most of them lose it instead, but there are other ways of pursuing money, which often succeed. So it is with happiness. If you pursue it by means of drink, you are forgetting the hangover. Epicurus pursued it by living only in congenial society and eating only dry bread, supplemented by a little cheese on feast days. His method proved successful in his case, but he was a valetudinarian, and most people would need something more vigorous. For most people, the pursuit of happiness, unless supplemented in various ways, is too abstract and theoretical to be adequate as a personal rule of life. But I think that whatever personal rule of life you may choose it should not, except in rare and heroic cases, be incompatible with happiness. If you look around at the men and women whom you can call happy, you will see that they all have certain things in common.

The most important of these things is an activity which at most gradually builds up something that you are glad to see coming into existence. Women who take an instinctive pleasure in their children can get this kind of satisfaction out of bringing up a family. Artists and authors and men of science get happiness in this way if their own work seems good to them. But there are many humbler forms of the same kind of pleasure. Many men who spend their working life in the city devote their weekends to voluntary and unremunerated toil in their gardens, and when the spring comes, they experience all the joys of having created beauty. The whole subject of happiness has, in my opinion, been treated too solemnly.

It had been thought that man cannot be happy without a theory of life or a religion. Perhaps those who have been rendered unhappy by a bad theory may need a better theory to help them to recover, just as you may need a tonic when you have been ill. But when things are normal a man should be healthy without a tonic and happy without a theory. It is the simple things that really matter. If a man delights in his wife and children, has success in work, and finds pleasure in the alternation of day and night, spring and autumn, he will be happy whatever his philosophy may be. If, on the other hand, he finds his wife fateful, his children’s noise unendurable, and the office a nightmare; if in the daytime he longs for night, and at night sighs for the light of day, then what he needs is not a new philosophy but a new regimen--a different diet, or more exercise, or what not. Man is an animal, and his happiness depends on his physiology more than he likes to think. This is a humble conclusion, but I cannot make myself disbelieve it. Unhappy businessmen, I am convinced, would increase their happiness more by walking six miles every day than by any conceivable change of philosophy.

今天我主要讲如何提高学生的学习兴趣。我们都知道“兴趣是最好的老师”，但很多情况下我们是在逼着学生学，学生痛苦，老师也没有成就感。

关于如何提高学习兴趣这方面，我从上一学期开始做了些尝试，例如在课外播一些欧美经典的电影电视片段，像《Friends》等，让同学们在欣赏影视艺术的同时也体验到了原汁原味的英语，从而提高了学习英语的兴趣。以下四点是自己在教学过程中的一些常用手段：

1、在上课时根据当时的时政或娱乐热点插入一些在我们日常生活中所遇到的英语，刘翔破110米栏世界记录时教他们hurdlerace(跨栏)和breakrecord(破记录)。深圳“申大”时我教同学们“申大”的英文表达(UniversiadeBid)。实践证明，学生对这些跟我们日常生活紧密相连的英语很有兴趣，因为他们学会后可以向别班没学过的同学和朋友炫耀。

2、学生们都怕背诵课文。但作为一门语言，积累一些基本的`文章和段落是很有必要的。怎么办呢?经过和王忠明老师的交流，我学了一招“快速读课文比赛”，具体做法是：根据实际情况将一篇课文定一个准确的朗读时间标准如38秒等（时间宜定得适中，大多数同学熟读后可以达到的标准），然后叫同学们熟读课文后分组或个人之间进行比赛。将枯燥的背诵转换成轻松有趣的比赛，在熟读中达到了记忆的效果。初中的孩子都有些争强好胜的心理，一时间课堂上会变得书声朗朗。“要我做”变成了“我要做”，效果挺好的，大家可以试一下。对表现优秀的小组，可以全班一起送一个“爱的鼓励”。（现场示范“爱的鼓励”）

说到“朗读”，只靠在学校的时间是不够的。还要让他们在家里也读。怎样才能做到呢？我们都知道：学生不会做你所希望的，只会做你所考核的。所以，一定要逼着他们去读。一方面要争取家长们的配合。上周的初三英语口语中考后，我根据其考试内容编了一份中考口语资料，里面设计了一个表格，要学生回家朗读指定的文段三遍并让家长签名确认，家校联合,形成教育合力。

另一方面，课外可以布置一些有声作业，例如：朗读课文并将其录音后通过E-mail发给我来打分。录音里的错误不能超过三个，时间在XX秒之内。这样一来，一方面逼着学生要熟读课文，另一方面也锻炼了他们信息技术方面的动手能力。有些同学上网聊微信很在行，但是却不会发E-mail的附件，尤其是女孩子。

3、在日常生活中渗透英语教学。例如：在上班会课时，偶尔在说话中夹杂几个近期所学过的英语单词。这并不是炫耀，而是让学生时时有想起英语的意识。再一个，班级黑板报设一个英语格言小栏目，学生轮流负责,每周一换。每节课前三分钟ShowTime，可以是讲笑话，小对话，唱歌，表演等，形式不限，只要是跟英语有关就行。目的在于培养学生的自学能力和表达能力。我在网上和学生微信聊天时也经常用上一些简单的英语，努力为学生营造一个英语的语言环境。在这里我向大家介绍一个免费英语听力训练网站：听力特快，是我大学时一个英语老师介绍给我们的，我现在还一直在用。里面有很多可免费下载的资料像“空中英语教室”（初级、中级、高级），VOA/BBCNews。适合各种水平，从初中到大学都有。

4、下午上课比较闷的时候，偶尔可以举行一下“单词接龙比赛”（每个单词的第一个字母必须是上一个单词的最后一个字母），可分组比赛，各组轮流接龙。

最后，我想简单谈一下分层教学。

每个班都大约有十来个30分以下的尾巴，他们基础差，英语学习处于放弃或半放弃状态。正因为他们的成绩太差，所以才是班级平均分最大的提升点。

关于如何减少尾巴生，我目前还没有什么好的办法。不过在上学期我试过一个方法。每天上课前我专门为成绩倒数的四五个同学准备了一些相对简单的单词和短语，附加几道容易的题目，打印成小纸条给他们。课堂上只要他们掌握了这些关键的知识点就算达到要求了。这样一来，降低他们的学习难度，培养了他们的学习信心。说易行难，我只坚持了几个星期，不过后来有一个学生家长跟我说，她小孩从不看英语书的，但有一段时间他回到家后会拿出一张小纸条来看。我想如果能够长期坚持下去的话，应该会有效果的。
