首先,对各位家长能在百忙之中抽出时间来参加这次家长会表示深深的感谢!今天我受学校领导的委托,在此和各位家长一起探讨孩子们在英语方面的学习问题。目的是希望我们四年级的孩子能更好地学好英语。我们的英语老师一定会竭尽全力,想方设法的教好我们的学生。这点请各位家长放心。
四年级的英语,是小学英语学习中一个重要的阶段。而对于我们现在的孩子学习英语应该存在这些难题:首先英语不是我们的母语,没有现成的语言环境,不能在日常生活中反复运用。现在的小学教材和中学教材已经进行了衔接,三年级学的是3a、3b,??初一则是7a、7b。而有些家长还以为“小学英语不太重要,到了初中还会从abc重新学习,以后再抓吧。”这是一种错误的观点。现在从小学到大学,英语的学习已经形成一个体系,是环环相扣的,是没有机会重学了。而且现在小学四年级的英语水平就相当原来初一,初二的,难度也加深了许多。“万丈高楼平地起”,只有地基打牢了,楼才能建得高。所以打好基础是非常重要的。四年级是英语学习的初级阶段和基础阶段,培养孩子良好的学习英语的学习习惯是最最要的。这些好的学习习惯会让他们在英语学习的道路上受益匪浅。同时激发孩子的学习兴趣,让孩子树立学好英语的自信心还也是不能被我们忽视的。这些需要我们老师和家长的共同努力与配合。
如何让孩子喜欢学英语主动学英语?
本学期牛津英语4a一共10个unit,其中的unit1到unit4和unit6到unit9是新授课,unit5和10是复习课牛津英语4a的unit1234和6789单元各由六到七各板块组成,第一部分是readandsay是情景会话板块;第二部分look,readandlearn主要按话题归类和图词结合呈现词汇;第三和第四板块中的句型是每个单元的教学重点,一般都要求四会掌握;第五板块readandact板块的任务主要是培养学生初步的语感,阅读能力和良好的朗读习惯;第六板块listenandrepeat是语音训练板块;第七板块funhouse是一个活动板块。教材要求教室注意培养学生良好的朗读和书写习惯.努力做到以听说助读写,以读写促听说首先,应该让孩子明确英语学习的重要性,帮助他们树立信心。我们可以告诉他们英语是一种交际工具,是你长大以后一直要用的工具,它是一种语言,不难也不高深,只要学习方法对路,只要肯花功夫,是一定可以学好的。
为了提高孩子们的英语学习兴趣,我们英语老师在课堂上注重寓教于乐,使孩子学得轻松有效。课堂上,大部分学生都能很活跃的回答老师提出的问题,积极跟着老师拼读单词,朗读课文。一堂课下来,80%的学生已经掌握了新授内容。但我们知道,英语记忆性的内容较多,如果不经常复习的话,容易遗忘。因此,光靠上课的时间学习英语肯定是不够的。学好英语,课后不断的巩固,加深记忆是非常重要的。可是,每个班总会有一部分不自觉的学生不能按时完成作业、不主动背诵课文、不认真做回家作业、更谈不上默写课文的单词。由此,学生之间的差距就慢慢拉大了。其实,在学校中每个孩子的学习时间都差不多,但校外的学习时间则不同。希望各位家长能针对自己孩子的实际情况进行监督,要教导您的孩子要有吃苦耐劳的精神。我确信:学好英语和智商无关,学不好英语的人都是懒惰的人。因此孩子们需要努力。我想孩子的努力也需要您的支持和合作。现在的英语成绩不仅直接影响孩子的期末考试,还影响着孩子将来的英语学习!
演讲稿是进行演讲的依据,是对演讲内容和形式的规范和提示,它体现着演讲的目的和手段,演讲的内容和形式。
演讲稿是人们在工作和社会生活中经常使用的一种文体。它可以用来交流思想、感情,表达主张、见解;也可以用来介绍自己的学习、工作情况和经验……等等;演讲稿具有宣传、鼓动、教育和欣赏等作用,它可以把演讲者的观点、主张与思想感情传达给听众以及读者,使他们信服并在思想感情上产生共鸣。
演讲稿具有以下三个特点:
第一,针对性。演讲是一种社会活动,是用于公众场合的宣传形式。它为了以思想、感情、事例和理论来晓喻听众,打动听众,“征服”群众,必须要有现实的针对性。所谓针对性,首先是作者提出的问题是听众所关心的问题,评论和论辩要有雄辩的逻辑力量,要能为听众所接受并心悦诚服,这样,才能起到应有的社会效果;其次是要懂得听众有不同的对象和不同的层次,而公众场合也有不同的类型,如党团集会、专业性会议、服务性俱乐部、学校、社会团体、宗教团体、各类竞赛场合,写作时要根据不同场合和不同对象,为听众设计不同的演讲内容。
第二,可讲性。演讲的本质在于“讲”,而不在于“演”,它以“讲”为主、以“演”为辅。由于演讲要诉诸口头,拟稿时必须以易说能讲为前提。如果说有些文章和作品主要通过阅读欣赏,领略其中意义和情味,那么,演讲稿的要求则是“上口入耳”。一篇好的演讲稿对演讲者来说要可讲;对听讲者来说应好听。因此,演讲稿写成之后,作者最好能通过试讲或默念加以检查,凡是讲不顺口或听不清楚之处(如句子过长),均应修改与调整。
第三,鼓动性。演讲是一门艺术。好的演讲自有一种激发听众情绪、赢得好感的鼓动性。要做到这一点,首先要依靠演讲稿思想内容的丰富、深刻,见解精辟,有独到之处,发人深思,语言表达要形象、生动,富有感染力。
如果演讲稿写得平淡无味,毫无新意,即使在现场“演”得再卖力,效果也不会好,甚至相反。
演讲稿的结构有自己的特殊之处。
演讲稿的结构分开头、主体、结尾三个部分,其结构原则与一般文章的结构原则大致一样。但是,由于演讲是具有时间性和空间性的活动,因而演讲稿的结构还具有其自身的特点,尤其是它的开头和结尾有特殊的要求。
一、开头要抓住听众,引人入胜
演讲稿的开头,也叫开场白。它在演讲稿的结构中处于显要的地位,具有重要的作用。瑞士作家温克勒说:“开场白有两项任务:一是建立说者与听者的同感;二是如字义所释,打开场面,引入正题。”好的演讲稿,一开头就应该用最简洁的语言、最经济的时间,把听众的注意力和兴奋点吸引过来,这样,才能达到出奇制胜的效果。开场白的技术主要有:1.楔子。用几句诚恳的话同听众建立个人间的关系,获得听众的好感和信任;2.衔接。直接地反映出一种形势,或是将要论及的问题,常用某一件小事,一个比喻,个人经历,轶事传闻,出人意外的提问,将主要演讲内容衔接起来;3.激发。可以提出一些激发听众思维的问题,把听众的注意力集中到演讲中来;4.触题。一开始就告诉听众自己将要讲些什么。世界上许多著名的政治家、作家和国家领导人的演讲都是这样的。
演讲稿的开头有多种方法,通常用的主要有:
1.开门见山,提示主题。这种开头是一开讲就进入正题,直接提示演讲的中心。
2.介绍情况,说明根由。这种开头可以迅速缩短与听众的距离,使听众急于了解下文。
3.提出问题,引起关注。这种方法是根据听众的特点和演讲的内容,提出一些激发听众思考的问题,以引起听众的注意。
除了以上三种方法,还有释题式、悬念式、警策式、幽默式、双关式、抒情式等。
二、主体要环环相扣,层层深入
这是演讲稿的主要部分。在行文的过程中,要处理好层次、节奏和衔接等几个问题。
(一)层次
层次是演讲稿思想内容的表现次序,它体现着演讲者思路展开的步骤,也反映了演讲者对客观事物的认识过程,演讲稿结构的层次是根据演讲的时空特点对演讲材料加以选取和组合而形成的。由于演讲是直接面对听众的活动,所以演讲稿的结构层次是听众无法凭借视觉加以把握的,而听觉对层次的把握又要受限于演讲的时间。
那末,怎样才能使演讲稿结构的层次清晰明了呢?根据听众以听觉把握层次的特点,显示演讲稿结构层次的基本方法就是在演讲中树立明显的有声语言标志,以此适时诉诸于听众的听觉,从而获得层次清晰的效果。演讲者在演讲中反复设问,并根据设问来阐述自己的观点,就能在结构上环环相扣,层层深入。此外,演讲稿用过渡句,或用“首先”“其次”“然后”等语词来区别层次,也是使层次清晰的有效方法。
(二)节奏
节奏,是指演讲内容在结构安排上表现出的张弛起伏。
演讲稿结构的节奏,主要是通过演讲内容的变换来实现的。演讲内容的变换,是在一个主题思想所统领的内容中,适当地插入幽默、诗文、轶事等内容,以便听众的注意力既保持高度集中而又不因为高度集中而产生兴奋性抑制。优秀的演说家几乎没有一个不长于使用这种方法。
演讲稿结构的节奏既要鲜明,又要适度。平铺直叙,呆板沉滞,固然会使听众紧张疲劳,而内容变换过于频繁,也会造成听众注意力涣散。所以,插入的内容应该为实现演讲意图服务,而节奏的频率也应该根据听众的心理特征来确定。
(三)衔接
衔接是指把演讲中的各个内容层次联结起来,使之具有浑然一体的整体感。由于演讲的节奏需要适时地变换演讲内容,因而也就容易使演讲稿的结构显得零散。衔接是对结构松紧、疏密的一种弥补,它使各个内容层次的变换更为巧妙和自然,使演讲稿富于整体感,有助于演讲主题的深入人心。
演讲稿结构衔接的方法主要是运用同两段内容、两个层次有联系的过渡段或过渡句。
三、结尾要简洁有力,余音绕梁。结尾是演讲内容的自然收束。言简意赅、余音绕梁的结尾能够使听众精神振奋,并促使听众不断地思考和回味;而松散疲沓、枯燥无味的结尾则只能使听众感到厌倦,并随着时过境迁而被遗忘。怎样才能给听众留下深刻的印象呢?美国作家约翰·沃尔夫说:“演讲最好在听众兴趣到高潮时果断收束,未尽时嘎然而止。”这是演讲稿结尾最为有效的方法。在演讲处于高潮的时候,听众大脑皮层高度兴奋,注意力和情绪都由此而达到最佳状态,如果在这种状态中突然收束演讲,那么保留在听众大脑中的最后印象就特别深刻。
演讲稿的结尾没有固定的格式,或对演讲全文要点进行简明扼要的小结,或以号召性、鼓动性的话收束,或以诗文名言以及幽默俏皮的话结尾。但一般原则是要给听众留下深刻的印象。
最后,要重视所写的稿子符合演讲稿写作要求:
一、了解对象,有的放矢
演讲稿是讲给人听的,因此,写演讲稿首先要了解听众对象:了解他们的思想状况、文化程度、职业状况如何;了解他们所关心和迫切需要解决的问题是什么,等等。否则,不看对象,演讲稿写得再花功夫,说得再天花乱坠,听众也会感到索然无味,无动于衷,也就达不到宣传、鼓动、教育和欣赏的目的。
二、观点鲜明,感情真挚
演讲稿观点鲜明,显示着演讲者对一种理性认识的肯定,显示着演讲者对客观事物见解的透辟程度,能给人以可信性和可靠感。演讲稿观点不鲜明,就缺乏说服力,就失去了演讲的作用。
演讲稿还要有真挚的感情,才能打动人、感染人,有鼓动性。因此,它要求在表达上注意感情色彩,把说理和抒情结合起来。既有冷静的分析,又有热情的鼓动;既有所怒,又有所喜;既有所憎,又有所爱。当然这种深厚动人的感情不应是“挤”出来的,而要发自肺腑,就像泉水喷涌而出。
三、行文变化,富有波澜
构成演讲稿波澜的要素很多,有内容,有安排,也有听众的心理特征和认识事物的规律。如果能掌握听众的心理特征和认识事物的规律,恰当地选择材料,安排材料,也能使演讲在听众心里激起波澜。换句话说,演讲稿要写得有波澜,主要不是靠声调的高低,而是靠内容的有起有伏,有张有弛,有强调,有反复,有比较,有照应。
四、语言流畅,深刻风趣
要把演讲者在头脑里构思的一切都写出来或说出来,让人们看得见,听得到,就必须借助语言这个交流思想的工具。因此,语言运用得好还是差,对写作演讲稿影响极大。要提高演讲稿的质量,不能不在语言的运用上下一番功夫。

语音是语言的物质外壳,语音教学是语言教学的基础。学习外语发音至关重要,发不好音,会给进一步学习外语造成一系列的困难。发音不正确就听不准,读不好,更谈不上用英语交流,而且还会直接影响到语汇的记忆和积累,有些孩子死记硬背单词,有的甚至还用中文给单词注音,我就碰到了学生给单词用中文注音,比如“spring”有学生写成“四不润”等,严重影响了发音的正确性。随着英语学习中新的词汇量的增加,学生学习英语的积极性严重受到挫伤,使学生学习英语处于被动地位。没有掌握拼读能力,就等于没有进入英语学习的大门。基于这种原因, 一、整体把握教材,抓住语音教学的契机 1.采用“随风潜入夜,润物细无声。”的教学方式 小学生的接受能力不如中学生,集中学习音标不符合儿童的年龄特征及认知规律,集中学习音标会使小学生产生厌烦情绪。因此,在教学单词时,教师要采用“随风潜入夜,润物细无声。”的教学方式,让学生通过观察单词的发音和拼写,归纳读音规则,使学生在不知不觉中了解字母与音素之间的内在联系。教师应充分利用PEP教材每单元的C部分的Pronunciation,但教师不能单纯地靠每单元安排一节课来完成PartC部分的语音教学内容。语音教学应贯穿于每一堂英语课中,特别是渗透于单词、词汇教学之中。这样,学生不仅不会产生厌烦情绪,并且可以保持语音教学的持久性。 2.合理安排语音教学的进度 二、巧用各种方法,进行音标教学。 音标教学能否达到预期的目的和理想效果,关键在于教学方法。单纯的音素认读、记忆,和反复拼读练习确实比较乏味。教师应根据小学生活泼好动、好奇心强的特点,巧妙设计教法,采用科学、有效的方式来教学音标,这样就会达到事半而功倍。 1.音标概念的引出要自然,形象。 由于我们面对的是天真烂漫的小学生,因此,音标概念的引出要形象、生动。宁都县的老师是这样说的:音标就像汉字的拼音,英语单词可通过音标注音拼读出来。音标的大家族里有48个人口。汉语拼音有韵母与声母,同样音标也有元音与辅音之分。音标的外形与字母十分相似,但音标们都有一件漂亮的小风衣//。 2.音标教学与字母、单词相结合。 学生在学习音标时已经学习了字母,在教学音标时,我们可以结合字母的发音帮助学生掌握音标的发音。如在教学音标[i:]时,让学生找出含有[i:]的字母EBCDGPTV。如在教学音标[e]时,让学生找出含有[e]的字母FLMNSXZ,这样,学生就很容易掌握音标的发音部位。在单词教学时,教师应适时地教给学生掌握字母(形)在单词中读音(音),掌握字母在单词中的发音规则。那样,在学生的脑海中就建立起了音、形之间的联系及其单词的拼读意识,培养了学生的拼读能力。如五个元音字母AEIOU在开音节、闭音节中的发音规律,字母组合的发音等等。 3.利用手势个别音素的发音 在听课过程和中,我发现用手势语教学语音效果很佳。如在教学音标[au]时,学生开口度总达不到理想的效果。于是,文清路小学的教师就利用手势辅助教学。当她发[au]时,同时在身体前方顺时针画了一个大大的圆圈,引导学生也那样做。结果,学生均找到了感觉。又如在教学音标[ei]时,瑞金市小学的老师请学生在发音时尽量将嘴角咧到耳根去,尽管这样有点夸张,但效果很好,学生也不会将[neim]发成[nem]。 三、趣味操练,突破“三关” 为了不增加学生的学业负担,在音标教学时不要求学生书写音标,主要是过“三关”。“三关”指认读关、听辨关、拼读关。学生学习48个国际音标就像学习汉语拼音一样,有一个音与形的认识过程,容易落入单纯模仿跟读、机械练习的枯燥单一的俗套中,学生很容易产生厌烦。教师应将游戏、歌谣、谜语等学生喜爱的活动穿插在语音教学之中,通过生动活泼的形式来加快认读,促进记忆,熟练拼读,学生的积极性就能得到很大提高。 1.积极利用各种教学媒体操练音标 我们面向的是天真烂漫的小学生,他们的注意力很容易分散。为了充分调动学生学习音标的积极性,教师应该充分利用电视、幻灯、录音机等现代化教学设备及自制卡片、挂图、小黑板等教具。借助这些具体形象的媒体刺激学生的感官,帮助他们记忆枯燥抽象的音标。 2.积极利用各种游戏操练音标 游戏是学生最好的朋友,利用游戏操练音标深受学生的欢迎。如文清路小学的刘薇老师就采用了游戏Missinggame(哪一张不见了),不仅可以让学生识记音标,还可以训练学生的眼力。(找朋友)游戏,教师报一个清辅音或浊辅音,学生快速说出对应的浊辅音或清辅音,教师报出短元音或长元音,学生说出对应的长元音或短元音。既可以练习对比发音,还可以培养学生的反应能力。当然,关于音标操练的游戏不胜枚举,作为教师要勤动脑、善组织,利用简单、易操作的游戏激发学生的学习音标的兴趣。 四、反复操练,持之以恒。 音标教学不可能一劳永逸,学生学习完了音标,并不是永远掌握了,由于没有具体的语言环境,外语学习是最容易回生的。因此,语音教学一定要反复抓,抓反复,做到持之以恒。教师要在教会学生音标的认读及拼读之后,注意培养学生按照读音规则,把单词的音、形、义联系起来迅速反应的能力。每次教新词时,不仅要会发音、会拼读,还要与旧词联系,进行一些归类性的训练,并且反复拼读,不断正音,学生在这样训练下,语音才会越来越好。 心理学理论告诉我们“小学生更容易形成习惯的定势”,学生一旦养成靠音标读准单词、靠读音想音标拼出单词、自动运用把音标和单词进行比较的方法记单词等习惯,他将终身受益。因此,在平时的语音教学中,教师应该坚持规范有序的语音训练,培养学生良好的语音语调,提高学生学习英语的积极性,使学生真正迈入英语学习的大门。 各位家长好, 我是本班的英语教师,我的联系方式是(略),欢迎家长与我联系和交流学生的英语学习情况。自这学期开学以来,我接任了六年级两个班的英语教学工作,这是我连续第三年担任毕业班英语的教学,可以说对六年级的教材有了一定的了解,对六年级这帮孩子的英语教学情况也比较深了解。但是和在座各位家长我还是比较陌生的,当然也有家长从百忙中抽空出来与我们进行过交流,但更多的是通过网络(即家校通)才和大家有一定的互动, 因此,今天有这个机会与家长们能够进行面对面的交流感到非常的高兴。感谢你们对我们教育教学工作的大力支持。 小学六年级,是学生的一个特殊的年龄阶段,需要家长和老师给予孩子更多的关心和帮助。同时,毕业班的“小升初”的考试,也会给学生、家长和老师一些压力。那么,我希望家长和我一起给予学生正确的引导和关爱,结合班级学生特点和主要问题,下面和家长交流以下问题,并提出建议。 本届六年级共两个班,分别为45人。这次期中考试考题偏难,满分100分两个班各有一名。我们班 获得满分,85分以上有 人;70--85分有 人;60--70分有 人;60分一下有 人。在试卷的抬头除了有卷面成绩,还有一个作业成绩,上面记录了我从开学到期中考试期间一共布置了多少次作业,您的孩子完成了多少次作业,从这里可以看到孩子平时在英语学习中有没有持之以恒,有没有养成良好的学习惯,和英语的学习态度,想比之下,这个作业成绩很好地辅助说明了孩子的学习情况。 小学英语的学习重点在于听、说、读,最好的状态是对英语有浓厚的兴趣,乐在其中。在这里也给家长一些要求和建议: 1、英语学习,强调多读多说及运用。确保孩子有磁带和录音机,每天课后听读。英语口头作业的“听读”是孩子播放磁带,播放一句停下来模仿读,读完一句再听下一句并模仿读。评价标准为:和磁带中读的越像越好。 2、家庭作业以听,说,读为主,请家长关注孩子完成家庭作业情况,并签字,保证第二天按时交作业。每周有3节英语课,一节早自习,每次课后都有英语家庭作业,周末有周末家庭作业,包括听、读和写的作业,望家长检查。 3、帮助孩子听写单词,纠错。 4、经常性的检查孩子书包里的英语学习物品,关心孩子的英语学习,询问孩子英语课上的听讲和发言参加活动情况。 5、如果当天没有英语课,也请帮孩子养成良好的习惯,进行不少于20分钟的英语听读或朗读。也就是每天都要听到你的孩子说了英语,而且至少20分钟。 最后再次感谢家长们百忙中参加家长会,期待我们家长和我的配合,让孩子爱学英语,爱说英语,养成好的学习习惯和积极的听说习惯。 也预祝孩子们的成绩更上一层楼! 假定你是李华,自制了一些中国结(中国结)。给开网店的美国朋友汤姆写封信,请他代卖,要点包括: 1.外观(尺寸、颜色、材料( 2.象征意义 3.价格 注意:1 .词数100左右; 2.可以适当增加细节,以使行文连贯; 3.开头已为你写好。 亲爱的汤姆,你好吗?不知道你能不能帮我卖一些中国结。我自己用红丝线,布料等材料做的。它们看起来真的很漂亮,呈菱形,大约5英寸长,4英寸宽。在中国,这些结代表友谊、爱情和好运。人们可以把它们作为礼物送给朋友,也可以挂在家里。每只12.99美元。如果有人想知道更多关于绳结的事情,让他们给我写信。另外,如果你需要进一步的信息,请告诉我。谢谢! 6高考英语作文 假定你是李华。请你给笔友彼得写封信,告诉他你叔叔李明将去他所在城市开会,带去他想要的那幅中国画,同时询问他是否可以接机。信中还需说明: 李明:高个子,戴眼镜 航班号:CA985 到达:8月6日上午11:30 注意:1 .词数100左右; 2.可以适当增加细节,以使行文连贯; 3.开头语和结束语已为你写好。 亲爱的.彼得,你好吗? Half my lifetime ago, I was striking an uneasy balance between the ambition I had for myself, and what those closest to me expected of me. I was convinced that the only thing I wanted to do, ever, was to write novels. However, my parents, both of whom came from impoverished backgrounds and neither of whom had been to college, took the view that my overactive imagination was an amusing personal quirk that could never pay a mortgage, or secure a pension. They had hoped that I would take a vocational degree; I wanted to study English Literature. A compromise was reached that in retrospect satisfied nobody, and I went up to study Modern Languages. Hardly had my parents' car rounded the corner at the end of the road than I ditched German and scuttled off down the Classics corridor. I cannot remember telling my parents that I was studying Classics; they might well have found out for the first time on graduation day. There is an expiry date on blaming your parents for steering you in the wrong direction; the moment you are old enough to take the wheel, responsibility lies with you. What is more, I cannot criticise my parents for hoping that I would never experience poverty. They had been poor themselves, and I have since been poor, and I quite agree with them that it is not an ennobling experience. Poverty entails fear, and stress, and sometimes depression; it means a thousand petty humiliations and hardships. At your age, in spite of a distinct lack of motivation at university, where I had spent far too long in the coffee bar writing stories, and far too little time at lectures, I had a knack for passing examinations, and that, for years, had been the measure of success in my life and that of my peers. I am not dull enough to suppose that because you are young, gifted and well-educated, you have never known hardship or heartbreak. You might be driven by a fear of failure quite as much as a desire for success. Indeed, your conception of failure might not be too far from the average person's idea of success, so high have you already flown academically Ultimately, we all have to decide for ourselves what constitutes failure, but the world is quite eager to give you a set of criteria if you let it. So I think it fair to say that by any conventional measure, a mere seven years after my graduation day, I had failed on an epic scale. An exceptionally short-lived marriage had imploded, and I was jobless, a lone parent, and as poor as it is possible to be in modern Britain, without being homeless. The fears my parents had had for me, and that I had had for myself, had both come to pass, and by every usual standard, I was the biggest failure I knew. Now, I am not going to stand here and tell you that failure is fun. That period of my life was a dark one, and I had no idea that there was going to be what the press has since represented as a kind of fairy tale resolution. Simply because failure meant a stripping away of the inessential. I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was, and began to direct all my energy into finishing the only work that mattered to me. Had I really succeeded at anything else, I might never have found the determination to succeed in the one arena I believed I truly belonged. I was set free, because my greatest fear had already been realised, and I was still alive, and I still had a daughter whom I adored, and I had an old typewriter and a big idea. And so rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life. You might never fail on the scale I did, but some failure in life is inevitable. It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all – in which case, you fail by default. Failure gave me an inner security that I had never attained by passing examinations. Failure taught me things about myself that I could have learned no other way. I discovered that I had a strong will, and more discipline than I had suspected; I also found out that I had friends whose value was truly above rubies. The knowledge that you have emerged wiser and stronger from setbacks means that you are, ever after, secure in your ability to survive. You will never truly know yourself, or the strength of your relationships, until both have been tested by adversity. Your qualifications, your CV, are not your life, though you will meet many people of my age and older who confuse the two. Life is difficult, and complicated, and beyond anyone's total control, and the humility to know that will enable you to survive its vicissitudes. You might think that I chose my second theme, the importance of imagination, because of the part it played in rebuilding my life, but that is not wholly so. Though I will defend the value of bedtime stories to my last gasp, I have learned to value imagination in a much broader sense. Imagination is not only the uniquely human capacity to envision that which is not, and therefore the fount of all invention and innovation. In its arguably most transformative and revelatory capacity, it is the power that enables us to empathise with humans whose experiences we have never shared. One of the greatest formative experiences of my life preceded Harry Potter, though it informed much of what I subsequently wrote in those books. This revelation came in the form of one of my earliest day jobs. Though I was sloping off to write stories during my lunch hours, I paid the rent in my early 20s by working in the research department at Amnesty International's headquarters in London. There in my little office I read hastily scribbled letters smuggled out of totalitarian regimes by men and women who were risking imprisonment to inform the outside world of what was happening to them. I saw photographs of those who had disappeared without trace, sent to Amnesty by their desperate families and friends. I read the testimony of torture victims and saw pictures of their injuries. Visitors to our office included those who had come to give information, or to try and find out what had happened to those they had been forced to leave behind. I shall never forget the African torture victim, a young man no older than I was at the time, who had become mentally ill after all he had endured in his homeland. He trembled uncontrollably as he spoke into a video camera about the brutality inflicted upon him. He was a foot taller than I was, and seemed as fragile as a child. I was given the job of escorting him to the Underground Station afterwards, and this man whose life had been shattered by cruelty took my hand with exquisite courtesy, and wished me future happiness. And as long as I live I shall remember walking along an empty corridor and suddenly hearing, from behind a closed door, a scream of pain and horror such as I have never heard since. The door opened, and the researcher poked out her head and told me to run and make a hot drink for the young man sitting with her. She had just given him the news that in retaliation for his own outspokenness against his country's regime, his mother had been seized and executed. Every day of my working week in my early 20s I was reminded how incredibly fortunate I was, to live in a country with a democratically elected government, where legal representation and a public trial were the rights of everyone. Every day, I saw more evidence about the evils humankind will inflict on their fellow humans, to gain or maintain power. I began to have nightmares, literal nightmares, about some of the things I saw, heard and read. Amnesty mobilises thousands of people who have never been tortured or imprisoned for their beliefs to act on behalf of those who have. The power of human empathy, leading to collective action, saves lives, and frees prisoners. Ordinary people, whose personal well-being and security are assured, join together in huge numbers to save people they do not know, and will never meet. They can think themselves into other people's minds, imagine themselves into other people's places. Of course, this is a power, like my brand of fictional magic, that is morally neutral. One might use such an ability to manipulate, or control, just as much as to understand or sympathise. And many prefer not to exercise their imaginations at all. They choose to remain comfortably within the bounds of their own experience, never troubling to wonder how it would feel to have been born other than they are. They can refuse to hear screams or to peer inside cages; they can close their minds and hearts to any suffering that does not touch them personally; they can refuse to know. I might be tempted to envy people who can live that way, except that I do not think they have any fewer nightmares than I do. Choosing to live in narrow spaces can lead to a form of mental agoraphobia, and that brings its own terrors. I think the wilfully unimaginative see more monsters. They are often more afraid. What is more, those who choose not to empathise may enable real monsters. It expresses, in part, our inescapable connection with the outside world, the fact that we touch other people's lives simply by existing. But how much more are you, Harvard graduates of 20xx, likely to touch other people's lives? Your intelligence, your capacity for hard work, the education you have earned and received, give you unique status, and unique responsibilities. Even your nationality sets you apart. The great majority of you belong to the world's only remaining superpower. The way you vote, the way you live, the way you protest, the pressure you bring to bear on your government, has an impact way beyond your borders. To use the vivid example to wake up the conscience in peoples love nature is to love our mankind. As the new generation who enter the new century, we should make efforts to love and respect nature, to treat it well and protect it.
